Yuji Idomoto

Yuji Idomoto is a postdoctoral scholar at GPS. His research focus is international security, especially the nature and degree of threats rising powers pose to other states. His current book project proposes a theory of why and how the rising costs of territorial expansion have changed the military dynamics between rising powers and their neighbors. He also works on game-theoretic analyses of military conflicts, the arms competition in East Asia, and Japan’s evolving defense policy.

Yuji received his Ph.D. in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Southern California (USC). From 2022 to 2024, he was a  U.S.-Asia Grand Strategy Pre-Doctoral Fellow at the Korean Studies Institute at USC. Prior to
entering the Ph.D. program, Yuji served nine years in the Japanese Ministry of Defense and the National Security Secretariat.
