Short-Term Programs
GPS offers short-term programs. Learn more about short-term and certificate programs at the School of Global Policy and Strategy.
JFIT offers short-term certificate programs specifically geared to Japan; i.e., these are short-term, immersion stays that explicitly focus on the study of Japan in the world and are based on close collaboration with our Japan faculty.
Advanced Visiting Scholar Program (ASP)
The ASP offers participants the opportunity to work closely with Professors Schaede and Kikuchi as they immerse in a short-term period of study and exchange, based on a research agenda tailored to their interests and career needs.
As Japan’s employment system is changing, many companies search for education abroad offerings that are short-term and tailored to their specific learning needs. Given JFIT’s excellent Japan expertise, we have a good grasp of these needs and can build a curriculum specifically geared towards those needs. We work with the corporate HR team and the visiting scholar to construct a tailor-made program that results in an effective, fulfilled learning and immersion experience. Similarly, our programs can be tailored to scholars from companies outside of Japan that look to prepare their employees for a successful career in Japan.
Different from the Global Leadership Institute (GLI) program, there is no pressure to take classes; however, students may audit any class they like while they experience the full research experience at one of the world’s premier research universities. Students are also free to travel, engage in corporate assignments, and participate in seminars and activities across the entire UC San Diego campus. Upon completion, students earn a certificate from JFIT / UC San Diego.
The ASP program can be structured at any length and to any purpose desired by the company, and can last from 3 months to a full year. Under the guidance of Professor Schaede, ASP scholars determine the exact timing and scheduling of their stay.
