  • Ulrike Schaede

    Ulrike Schaede

    Director of JFIT; Professor of Japanese Business, School of Global Policy and Strategy, UC San Diego

    Ulrike Schaede is Professor of Japanese Business at UC San Diego’s School of Global Policy and Strategy. She is the Director of the Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology (JFIT), and in charge of the school’s International Management track in the MIA degree. Her research focuses on Japanese business and economy, in particular strategy, management, corporate culture and innovation. 

    She is the author of The Business Reinvention of Japan (2020, 再興 THE KAISHA Nikkei 2022) and Japan Re-Emerges (2024, シン日本の経営:悲観バイアスを排す). She holds a Ph.D. in Japan Studies and Economics from Marburg University, Germany, and has been a visiting professor at various prestigious U.S. and Japanese universities, think tanks, and research institutes. Schaede has spent over nine years of research in Tokyo, and is fluent in Japanese. She is an independent director of Marubeni Corporation, and a Non-Resident Fellow at RIETI. She also serves as an advisor to the National Bureau of Asian Research in Seattle, and the IGPI Group and the Mitsubishi Research Institute in Tokyo.

  • Shinnosuke Kikuchi

    Shinnosuke Kikuchi

    Assistant Professor of Economics

    Shinnosuke Kikuchi is an assistant professor at UC San Diego’s School of Global Policy and Strategy. His research focuses on international economics, macroeconomics and political economy, and many of his current projects examine the interplay between technology, globalization and labor markets. Prior to coming to UC San Diego, he worked at McKinsey & Company. Kikuchi holds a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from the University of Tokyo. His research and interviews have been featured in national and international media outlets, including VoxEU and Nikkei.

  • Yuichiro Kitamura

    Yuichiro Kitamura

    Yuichiro Kitamura is a non-resident fellow at the School of Global Policy and Strategy, and the former President of IR Japan, with 24 years of experience in advising Japanese companies on shareholder relations, activist engagement, hostile takeover defense, as well as corporate restructuring and M&A strategies. He holds a B.A. in social sciences from Waseda University, and is an expert on how global capital markets relate to industrial growth and Japanese corporate strategies.

  • Yuji Idomoto

    Yuji Idomoto

    Yuji Idomoto is a senior researcher at the Center for Maritime Safety and Security Studies (CeMaS), the Japan Coast Guard Academy. He was a postdoctoral scholar at the School of Global Policy and Strategy from 2024–2026 and continues as a non-resident fellow. His research focuses on the security dynamics between rising powers and neighboring states, maritime security in East Asia, and Japan's defense and foreign policy. Idomoto received his Ph.D. in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Southern California (USC). Prior to entering the Ph.D. program, Idomoto served nine years in the Japanese Ministry of Defense and the Cabinet Office.

  • Hiroaki Niihara

    Hiroaki Niihara

    On May 2025, Hiroaki Niihara was in residence at the School of Global Policy and Strategy to discuss current Japanese economics and business. A former career bureaucrat at METI (the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), Niihara was instrumental in shaping the policy programs of “Abenomics” and “New Capitalism.” He gave two presentations on Japanese innovation and the creativity of manga artists and their companies.
